Shellf vs Moon+ Reader: An Honest Comparison
Moon+ Reader is the long-standing default for Android ebook reading. Here is where it still wins, where Shellf is different, and which one suits which reader.
Moon+ Reader has been the answer to “best Android ebook reader” for well over a decade, and that reputation is earned. If you are looking at Shellf, you have probably used it. So: a fair comparison, written by the person who built the other one.
The short version
Moon+ Reader is the most configurable reader on Android. If there is a setting you want, it probably exists. It is mature, it is fast, and it handles nearly everything.
Shellf is newer, does less, and is opinionated about three things: comics and books belong in the same library, your reading data stays on your phone, and if you run a server at home the app should talk to it.
If you already love Moon+ Reader and nothing about it annoys you, there is no reason to switch.
Where Moon+ Reader is ahead
Worth saying plainly:
- Maturity. Twelve years of edge cases fixed. Shellf is in beta.
- Sheer depth of settings. Moon+ has options Shellf does not have and may never have.
- Text-to-speech. Moon+ has good TTS. Shellf has none yet.
- Sync services. Dropbox, Google Drive, and its own sync are all built in.
- Track record. It is not going anywhere.
Where the two differ
| Shellf | Moon+ Reader | |
|---|---|---|
| Comics and manga | In the same library as books | Separate app (Perfect Viewer) |
| Ads in the free version | None | Yes, in the free tier |
| Jellyfin sync | Built in | No |
| Analytics / tracking | None | Some in the free version |
| Price model | One payment, planned | Free tier plus paid Pro |
| Platform | Android now, iOS later | Android |
| Maturity | Beta | Long established |
Comics live with books
Moon+ Reader is an ebook reader. For comics, the same developer makes Perfect Viewer, which is also very good — but it is a second app with a second library and a second set of reading positions. Shellf treats a CBZ the same way it treats an EPUB: one shelf, one progress list, filters to separate them when you want.
Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you read both.
Nothing is watching
Moon+ Reader’s free version carries ads and some analytics, which is a completely normal way to fund an app. Shellf has neither, in any version — no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting. The trade is that there will not be a free tier: it will be one payment.
It talks to your own server
If you run Jellyfin at home, Shellf connects to it, pulls your library down, and keeps your reading position in step across devices. Moon+ Reader syncs through Dropbox, Drive or its own service instead, which works well and requires no server — but also means your data goes somewhere other than your own machine.
This is only an advantage if you already self-host. If you do not, Moon+ Reader’s sync is easier.
Formats
Both handle the usual set. Shellf adds comic formats in the same app:
| Shellf | Moon+ Reader | |
|---|---|---|
| EPUB | Yes | Yes |
| MOBI / AZW3 | Yes | Yes |
| Yes | Yes | |
| FB2 | Yes | Yes |
| TXT / Markdown | Yes | Yes |
| CBZ / CBR | Yes | Via Perfect Viewer |
Neither can open DRM’d Kindle purchases, and neither claims to.
Which one should you use?
Stay with Moon+ Reader if you want maximum configurability, you need text-to-speech, you want a free option, or you only read text books and your current setup is fine.
Try Shellf if you read comics or manga alongside books, you run a Jellyfin server, you would rather pay once than see ads, or you want a reader that collects nothing about you.
Shellf is in open beta and free to try while it is. Nothing is for sale yet, so there is no decision to make beyond whether you like it.
