How to Read Comics and Manga from Jellyfin on Android
Jellyfin stores CBZ and CBR files perfectly well but reads them badly. Here is how to get comics and manga from your server onto your phone, with right-to-left reading that works.
Comics are the format Jellyfin handles least gracefully. It will happily index a folder of CBZ files, show you the covers, and then hand you a page viewer that does not know manga reads right-to-left, cannot join a two-page spread, and forgets which page you were on the moment you close the tab.
The fix is the same as with ebooks: keep Jellyfin as the library, and read on a reader.
Getting the library in order first
Comics punish sloppy filenames more than books do, because the reader has to work out page order from inside the archive.
- Name the pages so they sort.

A good reader compensates for this; not all of them do. - One archive per issue or volume. Do not put a whole series in a single CBZ. You lose per-issue progress tracking, and the file becomes slow to open.
- CBZ over CBR if you have a choice. CBZ is just a ZIP file, which every piece of software on earth can open. CBR is a RAR, which is patent-encumbered and quietly unsupported in a surprising number of apps. Converting is lossless — it is the same images in a different container.
- Add a
ComicInfo.xmlif you can be bothered. Most tagging tools write one. It carries the series name, volume number and reading direction, which saves you setting them by hand later.
Connecting the phone
With Shellf:
- Install the Book Reader plugin on your Jellyfin server and restart it — the ebook guide walks through it step by step.
- In the app, Settings → Jellyfin → Connect, then enter your server address.
- Your comics appear alongside your books, filtered under Comics.
Downloading is per-volume. A 200MB scanlation does not need to live on your phone forever — grab it, read it, delete it, and the server still has it.
The settings that actually matter for comics
Reading direction
Manga reads right-to-left. Western comics read left-to-right. Webtoons scroll vertically and have
no page turns at all. Shellf reads the direction out of ComicInfo.xml when it is there, and you
can override it per-series when it is not — so you are not flipping a global setting every time
you switch between Berserk and Saga.
Two-page spreads
A double-page splash panel is stored as two separate images. Turn your phone sideways and a decent reader will detect the pair and join them into one picture rather than showing you half a drawing twice. This is automatic in Shellf, and can be turned off for the odd series where the detection guesses wrong.
Page preloading
Scans are big. If the reader loads each page only when you ask for it, every tap has a visible pause. Pages should be decoded a few ahead of where you are, so that turning the page is instant even on a 4000px-tall scan.
Reading away from home
Same answer as with books: download before you go, or put a VPN back to your own network — either Tailscale or WireGuard — rather than exposing Jellyfin to the internet. Since the files sit on your phone once downloaded, offline is the normal case.
Worth knowing
- Progress syncs per issue, so finishing volume 4 on your tablet marks it read on your phone.
- CBR works even though CBZ is tidier; you do not have to convert anything first.
- You do not need Jellyfin at all. Point Shellf at a Comics folder on your phone and it behaves the same.
